JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Care Assistant/CHAPS

RESPONSIBLE TO: Nurse / Manager

Company Main Responsibilities

  • To provide up to date training for all areas.
  • To provide up to date policies in line with Government requirements.
  • To provide efficient equipment, personal protective equipment and a suitable uniform.
  • To ensure all health and safety guidelines are worked within and sufficient action is taken this is evidenced not to be the case.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To supervise the carers and assist them in carrying out their duties, whilst at all times being responsible to the RGN in charge.

Main Responsibilities

1) To lead the care assistants in carrying out the daily routines, including:

– explaining the routine for each shift

– Reference to linen trolleys, towels & face cloths, aprons

– Privacy, dignity & confidentiality decisions

– ensuring recording of bowels, baths and personal care

– assisting the Activities Organiser as required –if applicable

2) To implement care plans and review in a timely manner, following the home policies.

3) To be aware of any relevant ‘handover’ information and diary details at the start of the shift and to assist in the smooth running of each shift.

4) To administer medication in accordance with NMC guidelines & document, record on MAR, assist with ordering and checking in of medications.

5) To ensure the carers adhere to the duty rota for each shift.

6) To pass on knowledge gained from the NVQ Level 3 certificate or equal experience.

7) To assist the qualified staff in organising the care assistants on each shift.

8) To emphasise the responsibilities and duties contained in the daytime care assistants’ job descriptions and enforce them.

9) To ensure that new care assistants are kept fully occupied and adhere to all the company’s policy’s.

10) To spend time with the residents, talking and taking part in any available activities, as other duties permit.

11) To assist the qualified staff in the training of all care assistants to carry out monthly observations of the residents in line with their care plan reviews and more regularly should the home manager request so.

12) To uphold supervisions with allocated staff following company policies.

13) To teach the responsibilities of the key worker system and ensure this is carried out.

14) Report any damages to the Nurse in charge and document accordingly in the maintenance book.

15) To attend all mandatory training as delegated by the home manager to ensure safe working practices.

16) Answer the door and telephone. Make visitors welcome and give them any assistance they may require ensuring they sign in and out of the building.

17) All staff to know how to activate emergency call systems and to respond to an emergency calls immediately.

18) To be reliable in attending rotaed shifts and if unable to attend you must provide the home with adequate notice of 6 six hours and keep the Manager regularly informed of your current status. Complete accurate timesheets. Also to inform the company of any changes of personal details, e.g. name changes, telephone numbers etc.

19) Take part in staff and resident meetings when required.

20) Assisting District Nurses with Visits with Residential residents and documenting accordingly.

21) Referrals to Multi-disciplinary team ie. Physio, Dietician, Speech & Language Therapist (SALT), GP.
